I Love Press Releases
Welcome to I Love Press Releases. If your first question upon arriving at this site is "why do you love press releases?" then you should read Why I Love Press Releases and stop bothering me.
This is a landing page. Landing pages are to help you figure out what you are looking at and how to make use of it. As you can see, it seems to be working so far. After all, you are reading this, so you must be in search of information about this site that you don't already know. This is the place to get your bearings so you can go someplace else.
So let's begin with the navigation. This is a press release site. It is a site about press releases. A major part of this site is articles about press releases including such topics as what press releases are, how to write them, how to write a good one, and what you can use them for. Another major component of this site is an archive of press releases. There's nothing worse than reading about something when you don't know what it looks like, so I am archiving examples, LOTS of examples. That way I never run out of material.
I have divided press releases into three categories based on what I consider to be the purpose of the press release. Press releases used to have one purpose: to release news to the press. With the advent of publishing press releases online, I now believe they have at least three. In addition to communicating news, press releases are also used for advertising and announcements about internal activity within a company.
Advertisements: Press releases can be used as advertisements because anyone can access them, including customers and potential customers. Sometimes companies issue press releases with the sole intent of telling the world about their new product or service--especially why you should want it and where you can get it. They are also used to manage brand identity.
News: Press releases are still sources of news. Companies communicate to newspapers and magazines about recent events, promotions, mergers, investments, finances, analytics and a bunch of other stuff. The whole challenge of writing press releases is to make everything sound like news, even when it's not.
Announcements: Sometimes companies write press releases to share information about what is happening internally within the company, such as changes to its management team, new policies put into play, and other information that may interest investors.
You can use the navigation bar at the top of this page (and every page) to find your way around this site. Articles about press releases can be found under articles. Examples of press releases can be found under press releases. If you happen to get lost, the Overview tab will bring you back to this page and the Sitemap will help you navigate the links.
Thanks for sticking through the orientation. I hope you find press releases as enjoyable as I do!
